Water Watch Week is a series of fun programs and events designed to:

  • engage citizens in water oriented activities,
  • highlight the importance of keeping our lakes, rivers and streams clean
  • promote ways we can further this cause.

Promoting and protecting water quality is the goal of the many watershed organizations in the Ozarks, which have joined together with business and community partners to sponsor Water Watch Week. It's also a week to get out and enjoy the water!

        The Alliance wants to see your best watershed photos this spring!


        Calling all amateur and semi-professional photographers:

        The Beaver Watershed Alliance is excited to announce the Watershed Photography Contest in conjunction with this year's Water Watch Week in Arkansas! We are looking for striking images of nature, highlighting the diversity of the Beaver Lake Watershed. Photos may be taken anywhere in the watershed, which includes War Eagle Creek, Richland Creek, Lake Sequoyah, the West Fork of the White River, the Headwaters of the White River, and Beaver Lake. Visit our website at www.beaverwatershedalliance.org for a map of the watershed. Photos may include elements of water, but please note that this is not a requirement of the contest.

        Winners will be announced on June 1st at War Eagle Appreciation Day,
        where the winning photographs will be on display.


        The deadline for submissions is May 15th.  You don't have to travel far to get into the watershed if you live in Northwest Arkansas, so there's still time for you to take a photo and submit it!  Prizes will be given to the top three photographs in each age category (9-17 and 18+), and are as follows:

        • First Prize: Camera, gift card package from Bedford Camera & Video: CONTOUR ROAM WATERSPORTS Camera KIT, A 16GB Micro SD Card, Gift certificate for $100 in CONTOUR Accessories
        • Second Prize: 4-hour private Photography Instruction with Stephen Ironside of Ironside Photography
        • Third Prize: Railroad excursion for 2 to Van Buren on the Arkansas Missouri Railroad, lunch included

          Water Education Center and LID Tour




          Beaver Water District’s Water Education Center is designed to educate both adults and children about the value of drinking water and stewardship of the watershed as a natural resource. Beaver Water District thanks The Walton Family Foundation for Water Education Center grant funding.

          The Center is located at 301 N. Primrose Road in Lowell, Arkansas, at the Administration Center and includes the following:

          - A scale Drinking Water Plant Model
          - Interactive kiosks exploring the history of water, water treatment, and watersheds
          - Wall sized watershed map of the Beaver Lake Watershed

          The building and grounds also offer many opportunities for education about drinking water treatment and watershed awareness including a Low Impact Development (LID) walking tour featuring:

          - Pervious pavement to allow increased water infiltration
          - Flush curbs with filter strips to decelerate and distribute stormwater runoff
          - Infiltration features including bioswales, raingardens, and a bioretention pond
          - Drip Irrigation
          - Native plant landscaping

          Beaver Water District water feature that utilizes water captured on site and features native plants


          The Center, located at 301 N. Primrose Road in Lowell, Arkansas, is open to the public from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

          Join the Kings River Watershed Partnership for their 2013 Cleanup in Carroll County, AR


          Saturday, June 1

          Time: 8:00am


          Location: Kings River Rapids LLC next to the bridge on Ark. Hwy 143 Grandview

           

          Directions: from the Outpost west of Berryville take Hwy 143 north 2.3 miles, watch for the river cleanup signs on the right. If you go over the Kings River, you went too far. No problem, just go another half mile to Grandview and turn around. When you cross the river again and come up the hill you'll see a large white house on the right. Turn left across from the house and take the road down the hill to the cleanup.




          Kings River Watershed Partnership will provide the shuttles and trash bags. You'll need to bring your canoe and a lunch. Dress for the weather and you should expect to put in an eight hour day.

          Lakeside Forest Wilderness Hike

          The Lakeside Forest Wilderness Area is a 130-acre Branson city park featuring a variety of hiking trails, a scenic observation deck overlooking Lake Taneycomo, two miles of the Lake Taneycomo shoreline and 315 hand-lain stone steps that descend to the lake. This is a designated wilderness area, set aside to preserve a portion of the natural Ozarks.

           
          At 11:00 we’ll hike a flat trail to a 100-year old homestead with all buildings still standing. An area historian will provide the story of the area.

          Park is located immediately south of intersection of Hwy 76 and Fall Creek Road, across from the Legends Theater

           

          This hike is FREE and no pre-registration is required.

          Hike the Waterfall Trail


          This is a medium-difficulty, educational hike. The trail is located in the middle of Branson with the intent of connecting eventually to the Henning Conservation area west of Branson. This is a beautiful new trail, ending at a waterfall.

          This hike is FREE and no pre-registration is required.

           

          Directions:  Trailhead at northwest intersection of 2201 Roark Valley Road and Shepherd of the Hills Expressway.  Park on Roark Rd. and trail begins just behind guard station to Westgate Resort.

          Arkansas can be prone to temporary drought during summer months. As demand for potable (drinkable) water increases, so do controls of water use by municipalities during peak demand in times of drought. To address this challenge, there is new interest in the age-old practice of harvesting and storing rainwater for nonpotable uses. The most common harvesting method is capturing stormwater from rooftops into rain barrels and cisterns.

           

          The workshop is open to 15 participants and participants will take home a completed rain barrel. All proceeds will benefit Feed Fayetteville.

          Family Fishing Fair helps people learn about fish and fishing, and provides them with an opportunity to fish for bluegill and catfish in a stocked pond. Learning stations include tackle, setting up a pole, practice casting, macro-invertebrates, fish cleaning and cooking, and fish prints.

          Family Fishing Fair runs from 9:00 am until 2:00 pm at the Shepherd of the Hills Fish Hatchery (off Hwy. 165 next to Table Rock Dam)

          This event is FREE to the public and no RSVP is required.

          Three rain gardens have been established in the community of West Fork, AR. Two have been installed at the West Fork Library and have been awarded Washington County Project of the year for 2013!   A third raingarden has been established at the Renewable Resource Center.  Come join the Master Gardeners for a fun, interactive, and educational day while touring the raingardens of West Fork, Arkansas!

          Events wil include a raingarden tour of all of the public raingardens of West Fork, a plant sale of plants from the most established rain garden to help you start your own, plant identification in the raingardens, music, and entertainment. Master Gardners will be on hand to answer questions.

          Norfork National Fish Hatchery - Kids Fishing Derby

          Quarry Park (the Corps of Engineers Campground below Norfork Dam)


            The kids fishing derby is free and open to kids ages 1-15.  All the participants get a prize, and there are trophies awarded in each of the three age brackets (1 to 5, 6 to 10, and 11 to 15) for largest and most number of fish caught.  Parents can register their children at the park. Little kids get to fish in tanks provided by the Norfork National Fish Hatchery and older kids fish in the Norfork River.

          Every child goes home with a prize!

          Other activities include a lawn casting competition and even lawn fishing!  The fishing wraps up by 11:00 and free hot dogs and drinks are provided for the kids and their parents/grandparents.           

          June 8 is the AGFC free fishing day so no fishing license is required to participate!!

          Ride the Ducks and celebrate the pristine waters of the Branson area!

           

          Monday, June 10th from 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

           

          The tour will begin at the Dewey Short Visitor Center; we will tour a portion of Table Rock Lake and Lake Taneycomo. These lakes are important drivers in the local economy. Throughout this tour you will hear about successful water quality projects. Representatives from local water protection groups will show you how their influence has protected and improved our fantastic water resources.
                                                               
          Lunch will be hosted by Bass Pro Shops at their properties on Branson Landing.

          The 2013, 4-State Watershed Academy is a collaborative effort between Ozarks Water Watch, The City of Branson and The Illinois River Watershed Partnership

          Many cities and communities are addressing urban water quality issues, from wastewater treatment overflows to stormwater runoff. This year's conference "MS-4 Green Tools for Your Toolbox" will bring together professionals to share their research, implementation, and education strategies to build and restore cities while protecting our environment.

          This conference will offer usable information to a wide cross-section of stakeholders, from the professional developers or engineers, municipal environmental specialists, water quality professionals, elected officials and regulators or urban property owners. Each will find a tool for developing sustainable cities and ensuring environmental integrity within urban eontexts.

          Upstream Art Storm Drain Paintings Series Tour

          What is UpStream Art? 
          This unique and engaging educational event, patterned off the successful Storm Drain Reveal in Springfield, MO utilizes art to communicate the function and importance of our local storm drains. We are pleased to announce that the cities of Bentonville, Fayetteville, Rogers and Springdale have joined together to help bring this program to Northwest Arkansas. This exciting project gives artists the opportunity to express themselves with semi-permanent public art in the form of a small-scale outdoor storm drain mural. This project, along with the involvement of our vibrant art community, is unique and has a positive impact on water quality protection.

          Join us on a short walking tour in Fayetteville of the stormwater upstream Art projects as part of the stormwater awareness program in Northwest Arkansas.  We will visit 5 upstream art sites.  Participants will learn about the upstream art program, where stormwater flows after it hits the ground, and learn about the connection between water quality, stormwater, and their drinking water. 

          This event is free and open to the public.
