Upper White River Basin Foundation Update

Last summer the Foundation's board of trustees and staff spent time reviewing the organization's mission, accomplishments and priorities. The mission of the Foundation,

To promote water quality in the upper White River basin watershed thorough bi-state collaboration on research, public policy and action projects in Arkansas and Missouri

was renewed, and a new set of essential priorities emerged to guide the Foundaton's actions in the coming year. The Foundation diligently worked to accomplish these priorities and along the way, forged new partnerships, explored both new and old ideas and created more dynamic programs. Priorities identified last year include:

  • Monitor and report on water quality in the basin.
  • Serve as an advocate on policy issues which affect water quality and watersheds through regulatory and legislative means.
  • Emphasize public information, education, promotion and communication about water quality issues.
  • Support, encourage and capitalize on allied watershed groups working for common purpose.
  • Seek long-term funding support for the Foundation and water quality work in the basin region.

A full summary of the Foundation's activities is included in the 2007 Annual Report.

From the Executive Director

The propositions are simple but profound:
Drinkable water is essential for life;
Adequate water is the “oil” of the 21st century;
Clean water is a defining characteristic of the Ozarks.

The Ozarks is blessed with an abundance of water in our rivers, lakes and streams. But population growth, economic development and changing agricultural practice are threatening our water resources. The future depends on our ability to sustain the quality of Ozark waters for drinking, recreation, tourism, business and agriculture.

The Upper White River Basin Foundation works on a bi-state basis to keep Ozark waters clean. This website offers an introduction to who we are and what we do.

We invite you to join us in this important effort.

---John E. Moore, Jr.
Executive Director

From the Board President

Just as no man is an island every man or woman in the Ozarks plays a part in keeping our waters clean, beautiful, healthy and useful. We of the Foundation welcome you to our mission and our vision for what the lakes and streams of the Ozarks are today and will be tomorrow.

---Peter Herschend
Board President
